British designer Johanna Hehir (pronounced Hair) has been established in the wedding industry for over a decade. Her signature collections are full of feminine and flattering gowns fit for any fashionable bride and the new Mae by Johanna Hehir collection uses new shapes to create a relaxed and bohemian look.
How has bridal fashion changed in the ten years you have been designing?
“Bridal fashion has changed enormously! These days brides-to-be favour softer, less structured dresses with a classic neckline or skirt shape.”
Do you change your designs to reflect this or stick to your own creative vision?
“I adjust my designs according to what brides are requesting, but I never compromise on the cut and quality of my dresses.”
Talk us through your inspiration for the Mae Collection – how does it differ from your other collections?
“Whilst my usual Johanna Hehir collections are filled with clean, classic cuts and romantic detailing, Mae features relaxed, vintage charm as well as my signature simplicity. The type of girl I envisage wearing Mae by Johanna Hehir is a natural beauty, who knows her own mind and simply wants to express her individuality.”
What are the most important factors for you when it comes to the production of a Johanna Hehir gown?
“The cut is a very important factor for me, I have developed my signature cuts over the years to perfectly flatter the figure and provide comfortable structure. Every component of the dress comes from our experience in making dresses so we know the best quality zips, best quality lace, best quality everything!”
You offer both standard ‘altered to fit’ gowns and a made to measure service – what do you think are the benefits for brides of each service?
“Made-to-measure benefits those who are not close to a standard size (which many of us are not!) and can therefore have the dress made in proportion to their figure. If a bride is a standard size, she doesn’t need to incur the extra costs of made to measure and can order a standard size which can easily be altered to fit her.”
If you had the opportunity to create a wedding dress for anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
“I have three daughters and I’m looking forward to being able to design their wedding dresses. They all have very different styles so it will be exciting to create three very different dresses. Not that I’m in any hurry for them to get married yet!”
Describe the Johanna Hehir bride in three words:
“Stylish, confident and independent.”
Any ‘Pet hates’ when it comes to the overall wedding day look?
“Too much make up!”
